Mel Ismail, a 56-year-old surfer, has sustained serious injuries following a shark attack near Glenfield shores in Western Australia. The incident occurred on Monday during his solo surfing session. Ismail was attacked while approximately 40 meters from the shore, resulting in injuries to his leg and damage to part of his surfboard.
Heroic actions of the rescuer
Shannon Dunn, another surfer, has been recognized as Ismail's rescuer. He quickly paddled towards Ismail, who was in desperate need of help, and swam through the bloody waters to save him. Dunn said, "I can't even remember how I paddled, all I remember is thinking, 'What am I doing? What if that shark is still around?'" His priority was to get Ismail back to shore and ensure he would see his family.

After the rescue, a group of beachgoers assisted Ismail and used Dunn's surfboard strap as a makeshift tourniquet. Dunn noted that Ismail remained calm throughout and did not complain.
Ismail's medical condition
Mel Ismail was transferred to the intensive care unit at Geraldton Health Campus. Dr. Marie Pinder at the hospital stated that he is under the care of a multidisciplinary team of specialists and is in a stable condition. However, due to serious injuries, he requires a long recovery. Dr. Pinder added, "This individual is in very good hands, and our team is capable of managing complex and critical patients."
Geraldton Mayor, Jerry Clune, expressed gratitude to those who played a role in assisting Ismail, describing the act as typical of the community spirit in the area. He said, "I thank all of them. Many organizations and the community came together, and we truly appreciate it."
Roger Cook, the Premier of Western Australia, described the situation as "horrific" and stated, "The reports we have heard from this incident are devastating." This attack is the latest in a series of serious shark-related incidents in Western Australia this year. In May, 38-year-old Steven Mataboni lost his life while fishing with a spear near Rottnest Island, and in early June, a volunteer named Daniel Turpin, 35, was killed by a 4.5-meter shark near Michaelmas Island.
