Britain's aid to Malawi has benefited over three million people from healthcare services and prevented over two million unwanted pregnancies. This information is presented in a new analysis of recently released government reports.

According to this analysis, financial aid to the country has reached £1.6 billion from 2009 to date and has likely prevented 525,000 unsafe abortions. It has also reduced thousands of maternal and child deaths. These results are published at a time when Britain is significantly reducing aid to African countries, including Malawi, with aid expected to drop from £50 million in 2024-25 to just £5 million in 2028-29.
Humanitarian Programs and Achievements
Humanitarian programs in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, have covered over 3.5 million people, and over 400,000 children have gained access to education. The analysis also shows that UK-supported programs have improved access to clean water, sanitation, helped hundreds of thousands adapt to climate change, and improved access to public services and justice.
However, the analysis indicates that Britain's aid has not transformed Malawi's economy, which still faces challenges of weak investment, financial constraints, and governance issues, although there is hope for an increase in life expectancy by about 20 years since 2000.
Meanwhile, a new survey from the Rockefeller Foundation shows that public support for government cooperation in addressing global challenges is on the rise. In this survey, conducted among 35,000 people in 34 countries, about 57% believe their country should cooperate to solve global challenges, even if this cooperation requires compromises on some national interests.
More than two-thirds of respondents (69%) believe the world has worsened in the past year, while global support for multilateral institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank, and World Health Organization has also increased.
