At least 48 people in Ondo State, Nigeria have died after consuming a drink suspected to contain methanol, and about 100 others are currently receiving treatment.

According to Banjie Ajaka, the Commissioner for Health in Ondo State, cases of death and illness have been reported in the local government areas of Odigbo and Irele. He added, "The total number of people believed to have been affected is 182." Ajaka explained that "the situation progressed rapidly. Upon consumption of the drink, depending on the amount consumed, kidneys fail, vision is lost, and brain damage occurs." Some individuals who fell ill after consuming this liquid have been discharged from the hospital after treatment.

Ondo State Police spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, announced that one of the 15 people arrested in connection with this incident is the producer of the suspected methanol drink and is currently cooperating with the police in the investigation. Local reports indicate that the first death was reported nearly two weeks ago.
