The South African police have discovered the bodies of eight women in the Kempton Park area, located east of Johannesburg, over the past two months. These discoveries have created a wave of concern in the country and led to high-level investigations.

Ferd Kekana, the Gauteng provincial commissioner, stated that the police are examining whether these cases are linked, but have temporarily refrained from describing these deaths as the work of one individual or a serial killer. He added: "Investigators are considering all possibilities, including the potential for multiple suspects or separate offenders."

Kekana also noted that the similarities and proximity of the locations where the bodies have been found are concerning. Some of the recent bodies were discovered in the Olifantsfontein and Kwa-Thema areas, which are approximately 25 and 34 kilometers from Kempton Park, where the first five bodies were found.
Characteristics of the Victims
As of Wednesday, the police announced that the total number of victims has reached eight. All of them were women aged between 20 and 38 years, and they were found either naked or in partial clothing with bruises on their bodies. The first body was discovered on July 17, which was naked and bound with cable ties. A suspect, likely the victim's boyfriend, has been arrested and remains in custody.
One of the victims, Elizabeth "Tsontso" Musalakagumo, a 38-year-old runner, went missing last week. She was reported missing after her 8-year-old daughter informed family members that her mother did not return from her daily run, and her body was found a few days later.
Another body discovered on Tuesday in Olifantsfontein was naked and in an advanced state of decomposition. The youngest identified victim is a 20-year-old woman.
The recent deaths highlight the high rate of murders of women and violent crimes in the country, increasing concerns about the safety of women. According to recent crime statistics, between April and July of this year, the country recorded 5,427 murders, averaging about 45 murders per day.
The rate of murders of women in South Africa is one of the highest in the world. A study in 2022 found that over 35% of adult women in South Africa have experienced physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives.
The police have offered a cash reward for any information related to these murders.
