Investigations and Reactions
Swiss authorities have identified the aircraft as a "Cirrus SR22T" which took off from Lugano Airport and was heading towards the Rhône Valley after a stop at Sion Airport. The plane crashed near the town of Leukerbad in the canton of Valais around 4 PM.
The police have stated that the aircraft was en route to Buochs Airport in the canton of Nidwalden. According to a statement from the Valais police, signs of smoke were observed in the area, prompting officials to take action.
Emergency services, including police, firefighters, and three helicopters from the Valais rescue organization, were dispatched to the scene. Eyewitnesses reported seeing fire and smoke at the crash site. Images released by the Valais police show smoke rising from the accident site while rescue teams are assisting the victims.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and the Swiss Transport Board has begun its investigation to ascertain the reason for the incident. Additionally, the Valais police and the Attorney General's office have also initiated criminal investigations following the accident.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has stated that it is providing assistance to the families of the two British citizens who died in Switzerland and is in contact with local authorities. In a statement, they said: "Our thoughts are with the families during this difficult time."
