Kamala Harris, the former Vice President of the United States, plans to campaign next week in Michigan with Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate candidate. This campaign is part of the Democratic Party's efforts to attract voters in a key state that could impact Senate control.
Joint Efforts of Harris and El-Sayed
This is the first time Harris and El-Sayed will appear publicly together. The two have spoken several times following El-Sayed's victory in the primary elections. Harris and El-Sayed will participate in a roundtable on Black maternal health on Tuesday. El-Sayed is a physician and former head of the health department in Detroit and Wayne County.

Eduardo Negron, Harris's spokesperson, stated: "Vice President Harris is eager to return to Michigan and help increase voter participation in this vital state." He also emphasized the need to change Senate control to lower prices and combat Donald Trump's corruption.
Election Competitions in Michigan
El-Sayed will compete against Mike Rogers, a former Republican congressman, in the November elections. Republicans have repeatedly attacked El-Sayed, labeling him a "radical liberal" who they claim has influenced the Democratic Party. The current Senate seat held by Gary Peters of the Democrats is considered one of the crucial seats for the Democrats.
The Democratic Party is looking to flip four Republican seats to gain a majority in the Senate, provided they hold onto the Michigan seat. If Rogers succeeds in flipping Michigan to the Republicans, the Democrats' challenge will be significantly harder.
Some high-ranking Democrats have also supported El-Sayed after a tough primary race that showcased intra-party divisions. These divisions have particularly emerged regarding U.S. support for Israel. In August, Pete Buttigieg, former Secretary of Transportation, urged attendees in Detroit to support Democratic candidates in the midterm elections.
Harris, who lost to Trump in the 2024 presidential election, is being considered a potential candidate for 2028. Michigan will be the fifth state to vote in the Democratic presidential primary elections.
During her stay in Michigan, Harris will also meet with local officials, including Wendel Anthony, the president of the Detroit NAACP.
