Tim Burchett, a Republican representative from Tennessee, accused Congress of being unable to regulate artificial intelligence, stating that the institution cannot properly oversee this technology. These comments were made as President Donald Trump announced that he is the only regulator that America needs.
Burchett's Criticism of Congress
In an interview, Burchett stated that congressional representatives do not have enough information to regulate laws related to artificial intelligence. He said: "This group that tries to regulate anything is a dangerous proposition. Some of these people go home and can't even spell artificial intelligence, let alone know what it is."

These remarks come as some Democrats and a number of Republicans have also warned about the need to regulate artificial intelligence in recent days. A former researcher from Anthropic named Jacob Coxon warned that those working on artificial intelligence are deeply concerned that this technology may become dangerous in the near future.
Concerns About Congress's Ability
Burchett pointed to Congress's regulation of college sports, saying that the institution cannot properly oversee artificial intelligence. He added: "Look at what they did to college sports. They killed it. What they did to healthcare was the same."
These comments from Burchett come as Senator Bernie Sanders also held a meeting on artificial intelligence focusing on humans and expressed his concerns about the impact of this technology on politics. He said: "Our goal in this complex issue is to rely on individuals with sufficient knowledge in the country to protect the American people."
Some members of Congress, such as Lori Trahan and Jay Obernolte, have proposed new laws to regulate artificial intelligence. Obernolte stated: "We have no federal law, and the danger is that 50 different laws about artificial intelligence will be created in different states."
Trahan also deemed Trump's remarks about the need for a strong and intelligent president as incorrect, saying: "We need Congress to step up."
In contrast, Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, rejected the need to regulate artificial intelligence, stating that there are existing product liability laws that could include artificial intelligence. He also said: "If I hold an emergency meeting today and ask everyone to come and say let’s regulate artificial intelligence, no one knows how that should be done."
Meanwhile, Ro Khanna, a Democratic representative from California, announced that new laws must be passed and existing laws must be properly enforced.
