Cody Bass, the mayor of South Lake Tahoe in California, has been sentenced to 10 days in jail for an altercation with a security guard at AleWorx bar in Nevada. The ruling was issued on Tuesday in Tahoe Justice Court, with 35 days of the sentence suspended.
Details of the Incident and Ruling
Bass was arrested on September 25, 2022, on charges of assault and harassment. These charges relate to an incident in which he attempted to strike a security guard in the knee and threatened him by saying he would "kill people." Bass had previously been banned from this bar due to inappropriate behavior.

Bass's attorney, Adam Spicer, stated during the trial that his client regrets not testifying in court and did not express his viewpoint. Bass claimed in court that he was on his way to a nearby restaurant and, while passing by the guard, asked him to "let it go." Although the reason for their tense relationship is unclear, during the argument, Bass attempted to strike the guard.
Impact on the Victim and Community
The guard, Bob Hoyapotobi, stated in a victim impact statement that he has been harassed by Bass since July 2022 for several months and feels that his and his family's safety is at risk. He also mentioned that he lost his job at AleWorx due to this situation and believes that Bass's position played a role in this.
Judge Richard Glasson emphasized that aggressive behavior should not negatively impact the community and added that Bass crossed the line when his actions turned into harassment. According to the ruling, Bass must serve 10 days in Douglas County Jail in Nevada and refrain from consuming alcohol, marijuana, and other controlled substances for two years after his release.
Additionally, he is required to pay a fine of $1,127 and must not contact the victim of the attack. Bass remains banned from entering AleWorx. The issue of his succession on the city council during his absence remains unclear, and more information from South Lake Tahoe will be released soon.
