The administration of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, on Monday dismissed concerns about the rise of artificial intelligence and the potential entry of robots into U.S. cities. These remarks came just a week after he shared an AI-generated image of himself alongside humanoid robots.
Criticism of Warnings
Trump, 80, in a series of posts on the social media platform "Truth Social" late Monday, described these warnings as a "delusion" and compared them to past warnings about climate change. He also referred to those raising these concerns as "revolutionaries" who harm U.S. interests.
He wrote in a post: "I am a delusion-buster and I am currently breaking another delusion — that artificial intelligence is going to take control, and robots will come to our cities and wipe us out!" These comments came after he had shared a previous image of himself in a dystopian Washington D.C. surrounded by armed robots and spider-like machines with glowing red eyes.
Growing Concerns in the Industry
The debate over the dangers of artificial intelligence has intensified following warnings from researchers and some prominent industry leaders. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has called for AI companies to deliberately slow down the "development speed" of their models and warned that advancements may soon outpace efforts to secure this technology.
He also noted that if AI agents can operate on the internet, they could cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage within months. Other CEOs like Sam Altman from OpenAI and Elon Musk from xAI have also emphasized the need to control the speed of AI development. However, Trump dismissed these requests, stating that the United States currently has "extraordinary criminal and regulatory powers" over AI companies.
He continued: "The only protection this technology needs is a strong and smart president." Trump also argued that slowing down AI development could allow China to surpass the U.S. in technological competition.
Trump also addressed criticisms regarding the increasing number of AI data centers, describing opposition to this technology and its infrastructure as part of a "sick conspiracy." He argued that AI and data centers could become the greatest engine of economic development in history.
