This request was made in the annual "Goalkeepers" report of the Gates Foundation. The report tracks the progress of the United Nations' development goals set to improve quality of life by 2030. This funding, announced on Tuesday, will be used over the next two years for AI-related efforts to train models in local languages, improve health outcomes, enhance educational tools, and inform smallholder farmers worldwide.

Pressure on Congress and the White House
Despite a decrease in U.S. international aid, Mark Suzman, CEO of the Gates Foundation, emphasized that he will continue to pressure Congress and the administration of President Donald Trump. Suzman stated in an interview, "We have not lost hope in the United States. This has been a challenging time for the U.S. government, but we still believe there is a reason to continue this effort."
The report, which has been long in preparation, comes at a time when leaders of major AI companies have called on others in the industry to slow down its rapid development. The resignation of a former researcher at Anthropic over concerns about the irresponsible actions of developers has reignited the debate over whether powerful AI models could become uncontrollable by humans.
Gates stated in a post on his website that AI could be "the greatest equalizer" or "the worst source of injustice," referring to individuals' capabilities for cheating, spreading misinformation, surveillance, cyberattacks, and biological terrorism.
Developing Tools for Local Communities
The Gates Foundation, one of the largest global health funders, has focused more on democratizing the benefits of technology. Gates committed in his blog post that "all our efforts" will make good use of AI. He asked, "How can we use this technology to create a fairer world and prevent the widening gap between the rich and the poor?"
The Gates Foundation has also announced $100 million for building datasets in the local languages of overlooked communities. The foundation continues to collaborate with some leading AI companies such as Google and Microsoft.
