Norwegian police, during an investigation into a major money laundering case, successfully discovered nearly 67,000 American silver coins of the American Eagle type. This discovery, made in April 2025 in Bærum, west of Oslo, was facilitated after receiving a report about a van that was moving irregularly on the road.
Details of the Coin Discovery
After stopping the targeted van, police officers noticed a large volume of silver coins inside it. Subsequently, another van that arrived at the scene was also carrying a larger number of the same coins. The total number of coins discovered is estimated to be nearly 67,000, with a value of at least 25 million Norwegian kroner (approximately 2.65 million dollars).

Sentences Issued
On Thursday, Norway's Economic Crime Unit (Okokrim) announced that three Norwegians had been sentenced to prison for the illegal possession of these coins. These individuals were sentenced to up to 2.5 years in prison for serious money laundering charges. Two British citizens who were accused in this case were acquitted. Both parties have the right to appeal the issued verdict, and this ruling is not yet final.
The public prosecutor, Jon André Houslef-Aid, stated in a statement that it is gratifying that the coins have been recovered and a ruling has been issued that allows the victims of this fraud to have their wrongfully seized assets returned to them. He added that the victims, whose names have not been disclosed, can only receive their assets after the judicial process is completed.
Search for Other Coins
This discovery occurred while authorities were previously investigating a request from American officials to find more missing coins, following the earlier discovery of 79,500 other silver coins in 2019. With this discovery, they succeeded in finding this volume of coins. Houslef-Aid emphasized that the value of the coins has significantly increased due to the rise in silver prices over the past year.
American Eagle coins are produced by the United States Mint for collectors in various metals including gold, silver, and palladium, and each has a different value.
