A man who sprayed vinegar on Ilhan Omar, the Democratic representative from Minnesota, at a public meeting in Minneapolis on January 27 has been sentenced to 14 months in prison. Anthony Kazmierczak received this sentence on Thursday, which was in line with prosecutors' requests.
Details of the Attack
Kazmierczak, who is middle-aged, was sentenced more than eight months after the attack on Omar, during a time when the city was experiencing an immigration crackdown and mourning the deaths of two American citizens. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release, which includes a no-contact order with Omar.

In a previous hearing, Kazmierczak failed to provide an explanation for his attack and told Federal Judge Joan N. Ericksen, "This matter is unclear." Witnesses saw him leap from the crowd towards Omar and spray liquid from a syringe at her, stating that he was "tearing Minnesota apart." Omar's security officers quickly subdued Kazmierczak and turned him over to the police.
Consequences of the Attack
Omar was not injured in the attack and continued with the event after Kazmierczak's arrest. She later wrote in a message to Omar, "I’m sorry if I scared you" and took responsibility for his actions. Officials later determined that he had sprayed Omar with a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar and was charged with assaulting a U.S. officer.
The government’s memorandum of conviction submitted to the court showed that he had texted at least three people, indicating that he intended to carry out an act at the meeting related to Omar. He also sent messages to a neighbor to take care of his dog and to contact a bail company.
According to the memorandum, Kazmierczak has faced long-term issues with alcohol abuse, a "history of mental and emotional health issues," as well as health problems related to a Parkinson's disease diagnosis in 2022.
Ilhan Omar, a refugee from Somalia, has long been a target of anti-immigration rhetoric from former President Donald Trump. After her election to office, Trump said she should "go back to her country" and referred to her as "garbage," calling for an investigation into her.
