Fiji has declared a national HIV emergency as data shows that one in every 60 people in this island nation in the South Pacific is infected with the virus.
Increase in HIV Cases in Fiji
Recent statistics indicate that by 2025, approximately 9,000 people in Fiji, which has a population of less than one million, will be living with HIV. According to information released by international agencies, only 39 percent of patients are aware of their HIV status, and only 22 percent of them are receiving antiretroviral treatment.

The Fiji Ministry of Health has announced that the number of HIV cases in the country has significantly increased compared to five years ago. Now, one in every 60 adults in Fiji is infected with HIV, while this ratio was one in every 167 in 2020.
Government Actions to Address the Crisis
Antonio Labalawa, Fiji's Minister of Health, stated in a video message, "This means that HIV is now a national crisis, and the government is viewing it as a crisis. We can no longer continue with business as usual." He added, "More people in Fiji are infected with HIV than at any other time."
The Fiji government has stated that more cases have been identified due to increased testing efforts. The country will continue to provide free testing, clean needles for drug users, and free treatment for individuals who test positive.
A statement released on this matter emphasized: "This is about protecting individuals - not judging them, not monitoring them, and not shaming them."
As an island nation with its own specific health challenges, Fiji is currently working to prevent the spread of HIV and improve its health status. Increasing awareness and access to health services are among the measures being considered to address this crisis.
