Peter Martin went missing in 2024 in the Fond du Lac reservation in Minnesota, and his family continues their search despite the halt of federal investigations. His relatives say that the investigations by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs stopped after the relevant expert left the post in early 2025.
Lack of Manpower in Investigations
A family friend, Kayla Jackson, stated: "They have never replaced the person for this area, and yes, we have not heard from them since then." The Missing and Murdered Unit of the Bureau of Indian Affairs was established in 2021 to address widespread violence against Native Americans and direct new funding towards cold cases. However, this unit has faced challenges due to a lack of manpower since its inception.

Shortcomings in Services to Families
A federal audit from the Department of the Interior's Office of Inspector General revealed that the lack of manpower has led to a backlog of requests, depriving families of essential victim services. The budget for this program increased from $12 million to $17 million between 2021 and 2024. However, auditors found that 39 percent of this unit's budget was allocated to other expenses of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, including vehicle upgrades.
Nearly half of this unit's positions were vacant last year, while the bureau faced a one-third reduction in its staff due to hiring cuts under President Donald Trump. The bureau has stated that it has accepted many of the audit's recommendations and has taken steps to improve referral processes and train staff on victim services. However, federal auditors warn that hiring weaknesses still exist, leaving many families in the dark about their loved ones' cases.
David Adams, an Albuquerque-based attorney and member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, said: "Seeing the inability to respond in these situations is very heartbreaking." As of November 2024, this unit still had 83 active cases and nearly 400 unresolved referrals.
Victim families often remain deprived of the necessary services to support victims. In eight out of 13 reviewed cases, the relevant officer failed to contact the staff assigned to support families. Peter Martin was 31 years old at the time of his disappearance, and his relatives remember him as a sociable person who played sports with local kids and accompanied his nieces and nephews on various occasions.
