Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States, visited an elementary school in northwestern North Carolina on Tuesday and emphasized the necessity of U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence technology during her visit. While speaking with students, teachers, and school staff, she explored how technology and artificial intelligence are used in classrooms.

This trip to Ashe County took place on Tuesday, as technology and political leaders are discussing best practices for regulating and overseeing artificial intelligence. Some prominent technology leaders have warned about the risks of this technology and called for more oversight. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump strongly rejected the idea of needing more restrictions on Monday, calling it a "big lie."

Many parents have also expressed concerns about the widespread adoption of tablets in schools, even in classrooms for young students. Melania Trump visited Mountain View Elementary School in Jefferson, which has a special focus on the use of artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering.
Emphasis on Education and the Future
The First Lady, in response to a reporter's question about the potential of artificial intelligence and the increasing warnings about it, stated that students need to learn this technology so that the United States can act as a global leader. She added, "We need to show the way and teach them what is available. If we don't do this, they will fall behind. We must be pioneers in the United States."
Students also demonstrated an artificial intelligence experiment to Melania Trump. The First Lady began her visit by recalling the second anniversary of Hurricane Helen, which caused students to be away from school for over 30 days. She said during the visit, "Your story is amazing. North Carolina is a symbol of resilience."
Melania Trump received a warm welcome from students and teachers during this visit. A wall in the gym was decorated with a hand-painted banner that read in purple letters: "Welcome to Ashe County, Melania Trump!" After her remarks, she went to a fifth-grade science class, sat with the students, and guided them through an experiment simulating changes in pressure in the human chest.
Furthermore, Melania Trump announced that her Be Best initiative will help 1,500 students in Ashe County receive their subscriptions to the artificial intelligence learning platform StudyFetch, and 100 Jetson Nano developer kits will be donated to schools in the area.
She concluded by stating, "Maybe one of you will build the next big robot. And if you do, be sure to bring it to the White House to show me."
Melania Trump had previously attended a White House event with a humanoid robot earlier this year and pays special attention to issues related to technology and empowering children. This visit marks her fourth trip to North Carolina since 2025.
