Republican representative Tom Maske from Kentucky on Tuesday initiated the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegst due to the Iran war.
Maske's claims about the Iran war
Maske, who has always been a critic of the Trump administration, read the articles of impeachment from the House floor after a session held at noon. He claims that Hegst unlawfully initiated the war with Iran and disregarded Congress's order to withdraw from this conflict, leading to unnecessary civilian casualties.

Maske's challenges with the Republican Party
In recent years, Maske has frequently clashed with members of his own party and is nearing the end of his term as he has lost in the primary elections to a Trump-backed rival. Alongside Democratic Representative Ro Khanna from California, Maske successfully pressured the Trump administration to release documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender.
Although Republicans theoretically have enough votes to reject this proposal, the vote may be complicated for party members in competitive districts. The war with Iran, which is highly unpopular among the American public, has contributed to rising costs in the United States.
The government claims that this conflict is necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while experts believe that the country was not close to developing nuclear weapons before the war began six months ago.
Pentagon spokesperson Kinsley Wilson stated, "Secretary Hegst has been a transformational leader for the Department of War. The entire department stands behind the Secretary's vision and will continue to work to prioritize the military and America."
The House of Representatives must act on Maske's proposal by Thursday, which is a limited timeframe. This body is set to leave Washington for a long holiday this week, which will end after the midterm elections in November.
