Shalini Thakur, a 38-year-old woman, was murdered on September 8 in Sacramento, California, by Rohit Rohit, a 22-year-old man. The incident took place outside a chain restaurant where Rohit, who was living in the U.S. illegally, approached Thakur.

Details of the Incident

According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, Rohit was present at the scene before Thakur arrived and, after approaching her, shot her multiple times while she was fleeing. He then went towards her body and shot her in the head. Thakur died at the scene, and authorities used the "FLOCK" system to identify Rohit's vehicle. After locating the vehicle, attempts were made to stop it, at which point the driver suddenly braked.

Ultimately, authorities found Rohit dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shouting at him. Investigations revealed that Rohit had been stalking and harassing Thakur since January. At that time, Thakur had discovered that an "Apple AirTag" had been placed under the hood of her car.

Repeated Harassment

In another instance, Rohit had deflated Thakur's car tires and followed her to her workplace to offer help. Thakur's mother, Sudesh Kumar, told the media that her daughter had reported Rohit to the authorities multiple times.

Kumar stated, "She could have been saved," adding that her daughter had called the police several times but no action was taken. According to the sheriff's office, Thakur initially was reluctant to pursue a case or obtain a restraining order, even after Rohit gained access to her apartment and entered her home while she was sleeping.

In May, authorities advised Thakur to request a restraining order, which she eventually agreed to, but reports of violations of this order were recorded on July 29. On that day, Thakur reported that Rohit had left random food items in front of her door.

According to court documents, Rohit and Thakur met at work, where Rohit would pick up DoorDash orders from the place where Thakur worked. Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Rohit entered the U.S. from India in 2023 and had been living in the country illegally. He was detained by border patrol and then released.

Immigration attorney, Risa Morris, stated that this is a normal process, especially since he came from India. For individuals coming from Mexico, there is usually a different process.

A DoorDash spokesperson stated that Rohit registered using a Social Security number and completed all necessary background checks, but he had not worked in over six weeks.

Video footage of the incident was released by Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper. In the blurry images, a man is seen with an outstretched hand as another person runs past him. Then, as the victim falls to the ground, the man stands over her body and aims a weapon at her head.

Thakur's funeral was held on Monday, with her mother and uncle being the only close family members present, as many of her relatives live in India.
