The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has lifted pollution restrictions from greenhouse gas emissions at fossil fuel power plants. According to EPA officials, this action is considered the largest regulatory rollback in the history of the U.S. energy sector.

This action removes EPA regulations that were enacted during the presidency of Joe Biden. These regulations had required coal-fired power plants and new natural gas plants to significantly reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by the 2030s. Carbon dioxide from human activities is the main driver of global warming.

At a press conference, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated that pollution reduction efforts under the Biden and Obama administrations have led to increased energy prices and hindered the country from reaching its full energy potential. He also added, "The days of Biden and Obama working to destroy natural gas and coal are over."
Environmental groups expressed concern over this decision, stating that the rollback of power plant pollution regulations will increase pollutants that harm human health. Godran Thompson, senior attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center, said, "These regulations are crucial for protecting public health and combating air pollution."
The previous U.S. administration, under Donald Trump, had sought to reverse Obama-era climate programs, and this decision now appears to undermine future efforts to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

The foundation for climate pollution regulations began with the Supreme Court's decision in 2007 in the case of Massachusetts v. EPA. This ruling concluded that the EPA was required to regulate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act. This led to the identification of the dangers of greenhouse gas pollution as a threat to human health in 2009.
The Obama administration proposed the Clean Power Plan in 2014, aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions from power plants by 32% by 2030. However, this plan faced legal challenges and was never implemented.
The Trump administration replaced this plan in 2018 with its Affordable Clean Energy rule, which allowed power plants to produce more pollution. Now, the Biden administration has returned in 2021 with the goal of eliminating climate pollution from the electricity sector by 2035.
