The Los Angeles Chargers' defense faced numerous problems in their first game under Chris O'Leary on Sunday, ultimately losing 26-14 to the Arizona Cardinals.
O'Leary's Weak Start
It was expected that after Jesse Minter's departure as head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, a decline in the Chargers' defensive performance would be observed, but it seemed that O'Leary's hiring could mitigate this decline. O'Leary, who previously served as the safeties coach for the Chargers in 2024, was supposed to maintain and influence the 4-2-5 defensive system. However, in practice, the Chargers' defense was severely pressured by Mike LaFleur, who was coaching for the first time.

Defensive Line Issues and Their Impact on Offense
The Chargers were unable to control their opponent, converting five consecutive drives into scores or scoring attempts throughout the game. The team's only sack was achieved by Daiyan Henley and Troy Dye during a rare blitz. Weakness in controlling the offensive line also extended to run defense, with only one tackle for loss recorded on 34 carries. The inability to produce takeaways further compounded these issues.
These problems also affected the offense, forcing Mike McDaniel to distance himself from his famous ground game. The Chargers failed to convert opportunities into sustained drives, managing only 2 of 8 on third down and 0 of 3 on fourth down. The only successful conversion in the second half was a touchdown pass from Justin Herbert that cut the deficit to 16-14.
Ladd McConkey had a strong start with five receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown, but a chest injury sidelined him in the second half. Additionally, Quentin Johnston caught only two of seven targets for 17 yards.
The Chargers will host the Las Vegas Raiders next week, and with two away games against Buffalo and Seattle on the horizon, a loss to AFC West rivals could severely impact Los Angeles' playoff hopes.
