Barnes & Noble is expanding its operations by opening 28 new stores in various states across the U.S. and Washington D.C. This move will increase the number of chain stores to over 720 locations nationwide.
Opening New Stores
According to official announcements, the chain plans to open four new stores in September in Orlando, Florida; San Antonio, Texas; Elk Grove, California; and Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. The Jenkintown store, which will open on Wednesday, marks Barnes & Noble's return to the city after 14 years since the closure of the previous store.

Return to Elk Grove
Elk Grove, located south of Sacramento, has not had a major bookstore since 2011 when its last large store, Borders Books, closed. The opening of this store as one of eight new locations in California signifies a strong revival of the Barnes & Noble brand.
The revival of Barnes & Noble's physical stores comes after many locations closed due to fierce competition with Amazon, which started as an online bookseller. However, a CBS News poll in June showed that 36% of Americans read less than a decade ago, while only 23% reported reading more.
CEO's Comments
Barnes & Noble's CEO, James Daunt, said in an interview in July, "A brand revival is happening." These remarks reflect the company's determination to strengthen its presence in the bookstore market.
