Nusrat Osman, 47, a mother of two who was kidnapped in Malawi last week, was rescued in a police operation in the city of Blantyre. According to Malawi police, the operation took place on Thursday, during which four suspects were killed.
Details of the Rescue Operation
Richard Luhanga, head of Malawi police, announced that Osman is safe and has been reunited with her family following the operation. During the operation, police officers engaged in a shootout with four suspects armed with firearms. The police also reported that the suspects were armed with an AK-47 rifle and a Glock MC pistol.

The police stated in a statement: "The criminals were shot and taken to the hospital, where they died due to their injuries." In this operation, Noel Kaira, deputy police chief, was also injured by gunfire and is being treated in stable condition at the hospital.

Shubi Jiwa, Osman's brother, had previously informed a local media outlet that she had been rescued in this operation. Osman, who works for a local auditing firm, was kidnapped on Friday, September 11, around 12:30 PM local time in a neighborhood in Blantyre. She and her family moved to Malawi from Leicester after her husband started a business there.
Malawi police had announced that they were searching for four men who kidnapped her in a gray vehicle. The motive for the kidnapping has not yet been determined, and the suspects have had no contact with Osman’s family or authorities. Officials had also offered a reward of approximately £12,600 for information leading to Osman’s rescue and the arrest and conviction of the kidnappers.
Atupole Muluchi, a local politician, described the incident as "very concerning" and added that this case is one of a growing number of such incidents in the country. He wrote in a Facebook post: "Kidnappings and abductions are on the rise, whereas such incidents were rarely heard of in Malawi in the past." Meanwhile, the UK Foreign Office stated that it is aware of reports regarding the kidnapping of a British citizen in Malawi and is in contact with local authorities.
