This year, home buyers in Florida filed a complaint against a real estate consulting company due to the addition of these fees, which was eventually voluntarily dismissed.
According to Wendy Gilch, a researcher at the Consumer Policy Center, buyers should pay close attention to their contracts and challenge these fees if they see them. She also noted that these fees can significantly impact buyers who are trying to cover the initial costs of purchasing a home.
Ultimately, Kelly McDonald, one of the buyers, purchased a five-bedroom home for $445,000 and was able to request the additional $425 fee from the seller. This experience highlights the need for diligence and attention in the home buying process and the existence of additional costs that may inadvertently burden buyers.
