Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates

4 h ago

The Federal Reserve is expected to raise short-term interest rates on Wednesday for the first time in three years to combat high inflation. This decision contradicts the wishes of President Donald Trump, who is calling for lower interest rates.

Expectations for Interest Rate Increase

The increase in the Federal Reserve's rate, which is currently around 3.6 percent, is not guaranteed, as Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has not provided clear signals about future actions. However, most analysts and economists expect this increase to occur following Warsh's speech two weeks ago at the Federal Annual Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he noted that the Federal Reserve has not yet reached its goal of controlling inflation.

Impacts on Financial Markets and Economy

An increase in interest rates at this time could create significant changes in an unstable period for the economy and financial markets. The Federal had predicted last March that it would lower its rate once this year. However, with the escalation of the war in Iran and a sharp rise in oil and gas prices, it seems that inflation is likely to remain above the Federal's 2 percent target for a longer period.

Christian Forbes, an economist at MIT's Sloan School of Business, said, "I see no signs of an end to the war in Iran. Consumers and companies are quickly raising prices. The risks are more on sustained inflation than on a rapid decrease."

At the same time, growing investments in artificial intelligence data centers have also contributed to rising inflation and increasing long-term interest rates. However, leading companies are now discussing slowing the development of this technology.

The potential increase in the Federal's interest rate comes just seven weeks before the midterm elections, where high prices and costs play a key role. Trump is calling for lower rates, while some of his advisors have suggested that the Federal should not raise rates close to the elections.

Nevertheless, financial markets expect the Federal to disregard these warnings. Traders now predict a 90 percent chance of a rate increase on Wednesday. This figure has risen following the inflation report, which showed that prices remain high.
