Former members of Elon Musk's Department of Efficiency are developing a government services website called America.gov that will be equipped with artificial intelligence. This website is designed to provide essential government services to the public and is set to be unveiled by the end of September.
Features of the America.gov Website
This website will include a chatbot interface and allow users to perform tasks such as filing tax returns and renewing passports. This tax filing feature is intended to replace a free online program called Direct File that the Biden administration launched in March 2024 for the 2023 tax filing season. The Trump administration canceled this program in November 2025.

Concerns and Challenges
Marysi Winton, former Deputy of Direct File, stated: "There is a real need for simple and streamlined services. We really built one of them, and people loved it and trusted it, but it required precise and sensitive work." She also pointed to the complexities of the tax code and warned that at a time when people are concerned about artificial intelligence in government, this move could undermine trust instead of building it.
The development of the America.gov website is being carried out by the National Design Studio of the White House, led by Joe Gebbia, one of the co-founders of Airbnb and a former DOGE official. The team includes Edward Kurystin, a 20-year-old student and former DOGE employee known by his nickname "Big Balls."
Officials plan to use the identity verification website Login.gov to access America.gov, which will be overseen by the General Services Administration. Sam Kirkus, a former DOGE official, is also active in Login.gov and has recently been given several roles in the GSA.
While Elon Musk initially claimed that DOGE could reduce government costs by up to $2 trillion, only $215 billion of estimated savings in this regard has been recorded. The Government Accountability Office also stated that it could not verify 96% of the savings reported by DOGE.
