Research Shows Politics Affects Employee Behavior

1 h ago

New research shows that politics directly affects employee behavior, whether they talk about it or not. A study conducted on over 300 employees in the United States reveals that the content of social media, podcasts, and news consumed outside of work can influence individuals' behavior in the workplace.

Impact of Negative Political Information

Employees who consume more negative political information experience higher anxiety and are less engaged at work. Ian Hughes, a professor of psychology and brain sciences at Texas A&M University, stated, "Political information is designed to grab attention and provoke emotional responses."

Hughes added, "The challenge is that those reactions do not necessarily disappear after closing an app or turning off the TV, and they can continue to affect the rest of the day's experience."

Impact of Positive Political Information

Conversely, after receiving positive political news, employees feel more hopeful, and this feeling is associated with stronger engagement in work and a greater willingness to help colleagues. This research was conducted during the early phase of the 2024 presidential election season, from January 19 to March 15.

The findings suggest that separating politics from work may not be beneficial for employers and employees on the brink of midterm elections. Political stress can have serious consequences, including increased blood pressure, mood swings, sleep problems, and weight changes.

Hughes further emphasized that managing stress related to politics is not about reducing awareness. He said, "An informed society is important, and our study does not say otherwise."

Instead, this research offers strategies to mitigate stress caused by negative political information. Employees should balance awareness of news with activities that can help them recharge, such as physical activity, sleep, and meditation.

Workplaces can contribute to this process by providing mental health support and enhancing employees' sense of empowerment by allowing time for voting or encouraging volunteering. These practices offer alternative pathways for renewing hope and coping with the negative effects of political stress without needing to separate from politics.
