Several inmates at the New York Metropolitan Jail were stabbed on the morning of September 6 following a large fight. This jail is known for housing high-profile inmates such as Luigi Mangione and Nicolás Maduro.
Incident Details
Federal officials confirmed that the fight occurred on Monday at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York. Reports indicate that the fight was gang-related. According to Donald Murphy, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, several inmates were treated for minor injuries on-site, while others required medical treatment outside the jail.

Murphy did not confirm the exact number of inmates involved in the incident, and the number of injuries remains unclear. The nature of the injuries sustained by the affected inmates is also unknown. He added that prison staff were able to control the incident without injury to themselves and that public safety was never at risk. The incident is still under investigation.

The New York Metropolitan Jail is famous for housing notorious inmates like Luigi Mangione and Nicolás Maduro. Mangione, 28, is awaiting sentencing in this jail. He confessed last month to the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthCare. This murder shocked the nation in 2024 on the streets of Manhattan. Mangione stated in court, "I shot Mr. Thompson, and he died."
Nicolás Maduro, 63, and his wife, Cilia Flores, 69, are currently awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges in this jail. They were arrested in early January following a covert operation by U.S. forces at their home in Caracas. Their trial is scheduled for June of next year.
Both have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to transport thousands of tons of cocaine into the United States. Their indictment states that Maduro and his associates have collaborated for decades with some of the world's most dangerous drug traffickers and narco-terrorists.
The New York Metropolitan Jail has a history of violence. In February 2025, Carl Jordan Jr. was stabbed in this jail. He was convicted and later exonerated for the murder of famous New York singer, Jim Master Jay. In September 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice announced charges against nine inmates in five separate cases for violence at the MDC Brooklyn.
Breon Peace, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, stated at the time, "Violence in our federal prisons will not be tolerated." He also added, "This jail, as the only federal pretrial center in New York, houses inmates charged with some of the most serious crimes in our area."
