Luke Lindberg, son-in-law of John Thune, the U.S. Senate Majority Leader, is currently serving as the Deputy Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He will succeed Cindy McCain, who stepped down in February 2025 after a mild stroke. Lindberg, 37, has been in his current role since last year and was nominated for the head of the World Food Program during Donald Trump's presidency.

The World Food Program is facing serious financial challenges, with an estimated 266 million people globally facing acute hunger. The organization aims to assist 110 million people this year, while due to budget cuts, it cannot provide services to all in need. The United States has been the largest donor to this organization for several years, and the leadership of the World Food Program has been entrusted to an American citizen since the early 1990s.
Lindberg, originally from South Dakota, previously served as the president of the South Dakota Trade Association and played a role in expanding exports from the state. He also served in Trump's first administration as Chief of Staff and Head of Strategy at the Export-Import Bank of the United States.
