Paul Verhoeven, the director of Starship Troopers, stated that the Donald Trump administration should note that the heroes of this film are "fascists who are unaware of their fascism." These comments were made after Trump released an image of the proposed Space Force uniform designs, which were inspired by the 1997 film.
Space Force Uniform Design
Earlier this month, Trump released an image of the "next generation" Space Force uniform designs, which included a dark, tailored uniform, a sharp-brimmed hat, tall black boots, and the Space Force insignia on the collar, sleeves, hat, and belt buckle. The image stated that the design was "inspired by the discipline and functionality of the Starship Troopers uniform" and "modernized for the guardians of space."

Nazi-like Influences in the Film
The Dutch director, whose film has been misinterpreted for nearly three decades as a celebration of militarism, confirmed that the imagery used in the film was intentionally designed based on fascist propaganda. Verhoeven told Hollywood Reporter, "When [the Trump administration] talks about Starship Troopers, they should know that this film is based on the style of Leni Riefenstahl."
Leni Riefenstahl, a German filmmaker, was closely associated with the Nazi regime due to films like Triumph of the Will, which depicted Nazi rallies in Nuremberg. Her works used striking imagery and filmmaking techniques to glorify Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist movement.
Verhoeven continued, "I don't know if this president is aware that the film says these [characters] are fascists without knowing they are fascists. That is the key point."
After Trump's post, social media users pointed out the obvious similarities. Fashion writer Derek Guy wrote, "This is the kind of design that costume designers create to depict villains in a space movie." Meanwhile, health activist Melanie D'Arrigo wrote on platform X, "The design of the Space Force uniforms being reminiscent of the evil villains from Star Wars is a bit too on-brand."
