Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, described Canada on Friday as a strong country that is quickly moving away from its historical dependence on the United States. These remarks came after a tumultuous week in which Carney hinted at the possibility of becoming the first associated member of the European Union.
Developing Relations with Europe
Carney, who returned from Europe on Thursday, announced that Canada and Europe have "initiated a process to create a new alliance." He also described the new tariffs from the United States as a "miscalculation" and emphasized that suspending trade talks with Washington last month was the right decision. Carney told Liberal lawmakers in Ottawa, "In this global crisis, we must move forward."
Canada's Strengths
Carney pointed to Canada's financial position as one of the country's strengths, stating that U.S. government borrowing costs are significantly higher than those in Canada. He said, "We are now witnessing a change in financial market pricing that separates the strong from the weak. We are strong. We are Canada strong."
These remarks came at the end of a week in which Carney hosted Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, spoke with global investors in Toronto, and met with Andy Burnham, the new Prime Minister of the UK, in Liverpool. He also delivered a speech at the European Parliament, calling for a deeper alliance between Canada and Europe in areas such as energy, critical minerals, defense, and research.
Carney also referred to a summit of Canadian and European Union leaders on October 29 and 30 in Montreal. President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and has talked about turning Canada into the 51st state. Trade negotiations failed last month and remain suspended.
Carney also announced a business tax cut that was revealed at the Canada Investment Summit, stating that this measure will help reduce the effective tax rate on new investments to 6.4 percent, which is less than half of the U.S. rate. He seemed to hint at Trump while emphasizing the need for targeted initiatives.
The government announced nearly half a trillion dollars in investment commitments at this summit. Carney said, "In the past seven days, we stood alongside an ally, attracted unprecedented investments to our country, and deepened our relations with Europe."
