Joanna Wietzrek, the Australian Hyrox athlete, apologized for her victory and announced that she has canceled it after experiencing an issue during the race in Beijing.
Apology and Withdrawal
Wietzrek encountered a problem during the race and initially reacted to her victory by posting on Instagram. However, after negative reactions to the incident, she announced that she would retroactively withdraw from the race and forfeit the points she earned in this event.

In a statement, she said, "I want to sincerely apologize to the people of China, my competitors, the spectators, and the Hyrox organizers for the incident that occurred during the Beijing race." She added, "At the beginning of the race, I felt completely healthy and had no reason to expect illness. Looking back, I regret my decision to continue. I should have made a different choice and I take responsibility for my decision. I am deeply sorry for the distress and disruption that occurred."
New Hyrox Rules
Wietzrek, who currently holds the women's world record in Hyrox, completed the Beijing race in a time of 1 hour, 1 minute, and 23 seconds. Hyrox is a challenging indoor sporting event that combines running with functional workouts such as sled pushes, rowing, burpee jumps, and wall balls.
Moritz Fioreste, one of the co-founders of Hyrox, apologized to all affected by the incident, stating, "Hyrox made a mistake by not responding immediately during the race." He also announced that Hyrox is taking steps to improve event processes and changes in the rulebook.
Fioreste added, "From this moment on, new rules and procedures have been put in place to prevent such situations from occurring in the future. We learn every day and strive to improve." The new rules allow the race director to remove an athlete from the competition for medical reasons if their blood, vomit, urine, or feces pose a risk to their health or that of other competitors.
Wietzrek concluded her statement by saying, "I know that my action had an impact beyond myself, and I sincerely apologize to everyone affected." She also reminded that one must be aware of the timing of withdrawal from the race.
