In recent years, with rising temperatures and increased harmful solar radiation, the risk of various cancers, especially melanoma, is on the rise. In the UK, the number of new melanoma cases has surpassed 20,000 for the first time this year, sounding a serious alarm for public health. Melanoma is recognized as the fifth most common cancer in the UK, alongside two other types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, which, although less dangerous, cannot be ignored.
Challenges in the Healthcare System
The increase in cancer cases is directly related to the aging population and demographic growth. According to statistics, one-third of cancer patients in the UK are over 75 years old. However, the country's healthcare system is under severe pressure and cannot adequately meet the treatment needs of these patients. This situation has raised serious concerns regarding public health and the necessity for behavioral changes in the consumption and use of sunburn-related products.
Call to Action
In May, a group of UK parliamentarians proposed a ban on advertising tanning devices. These devices are associated not only with skin burns but also with an increased risk of skin cancer. Additionally, some experts have seriously called for a ban on the commercial use of these devices, especially considering the successful experiences of other countries like Australia and Brazil that have implemented similar measures.
It seems that the time has come for British policymakers to pay more attention to this issue and, in light of climate change and rising temperatures, to adopt more serious measures to protect public health. Should we wait for more people to fall victim to these harmful rays, or is now the time to act?
