I have been active in the world of classical music for years, and now, as one of the founders of the Contemporary London Orchestra, I feel deep and bitter emotions on the verge of separating from this project. Over the past 18 years, I have clearly witnessed how the doors of this industry have been closed to musicians from the working class.
Closed Paths
In the past, there was a way for someone from a middle or lower-income family to enter the world of music. I remember as a child, I could pick up an instrument in public schools and receive affordable lessons with the help of local music services. I could even participate in youth orchestras by borrowing a viola from friends and acquaintances. But now, these opportunities have drastically diminished and have gradually turned into a wish.
Today, despite all the talk about diversity and inclusion in the music community, there are harsh realities that no one pays attention to. When we talk about diversity, do we remember those who cannot continue their activities due to financial conditions? Are we aware of their pain and suffering?
Changes That Need to Happen
The music industry needs a fundamental transformation. We must address why individuals from lower social classes cannot engage in this field. If we want to move towards a brighter future, we must pave the way for all those who love music to achieve their dreams without worrying about costs.
These changes are only possible if we listen to the voices of these individuals and allow them to be present in this industry. Otherwise, classical music will become a closed and exclusive world that is only accessible to the wealthy.
